Pick up any book about Dachshunds, or any type of dog for that matter, and you can find a variety of opinions of how to feed your dog. Each one will although be consistent about the quality of dog food you chose and to avoid table scraps.
As a general rule higher priced dog food is so for a good reason. These dog foods produced by companies such as Nutro, Science Diet and so on contain no fillers and are balanced nutritionally for all ages of dogs. They also provide for overweight and senior/less active dogs needs as well.
When your receive your puppy/dog, check with the breeder to ensure that you continue with the same type of dog
food as suddenly changing their type of food can cause the dog to get
sick. Upset tummy wise that is.
It may unusual to feed your dog the same type of food for its entire life, but that's a strictly human point of view. Your dog has difficulty adjusting to new food types and cause indigestion and discomfort. If you do need to change over to an other type food, say to control weight, keep with the same make and slowly blend in the new food over a week or two until the old one is completely replaced.
Peculiar to Dachshunds, great care should be taken to avoid letting your pooch get overweight. This is necessary as a weight problem may affect your Dachshunds back health. Controlling your dogs weight should be a combination of regular exercise and low fat dog food. All quality dog foods will have the fat content of the product listed on the side and you wish to consider this.
Feeding your Dachshund may be either once a day or twice a day. It should be consistent with your breeder. On a personal note, I feed my two Dachsies twice a day, because if we are late returning from being away from the house and were to miss their feeding time, they would not go any extended amount of without food. I have also found it most practical to fed the dogs at the same time we eat, minimizing the opportunity for begging. Water should always available.
Thanks to Jennifer Landry who suggests that you use either stainless steel or glass bowls to minimize the risk of infection
caused by germs in your dogs dish. Stainless and Glass bowls could be run through the dishwasher to ensure that they remain sterile. One of her dogs got an infection caused by a plastic bowl. Worth thinking about.
It should also be noted that you should never feed your dog form the table with "bites" of food as this will encourage begging at the table. Do it a few times and your dog will be a "little beggar" for the rest of his life. Resist the temptation and tell your visitors the same.
The feeding location for your pet should not be moved about. Some dogs can have an adverse reaction to having their feed bowl moved.
Consider the following rules about feeding your dog.
Meals should be appropriate and balanced. |
Feed your dog at the same time every day. |
Don't feed your dog leftovers. |
Dogs need rest after eating. |
Clean the food dish with warm water only. |
The dog food should be served at room temperature. |
How much food? Each dog is unique, but the amount of 9 ounces/250 grams (1 cup) for each 12 pounds/7 kilos per day is a good starting point. Then just be aware of your dogs behavior and make changes as needed. You also might consult the breeder to find out how much they feed to their dogs as well.
