The Canadian Dachshund Lovers Page was inspired by The Western Dachshund Club. They hold events of interest to all Dachshund Owners in British Columbia, and Western Canada. The Western Dachshund Club also hosts an Annual Championship Specialty Show in October at the Tradex Centre in Abbotsford, BC, and a fun day, "Dachshund Picnic and Wiener Walk" for all Dachshunds on the second Sunday in August at Winskil Park in Tsawassen, Delta, BC.

Dachshund News and Events

To those of you have been so kind as to send me pictures of your dogs, thank you, and I'm sorry I have not had time to post them. I'm going to put in some serious time on the site in the next week and hopefully I'll get most of your pictures posted.

The 2003 Dachshund Picnic/Wiener Walk has come and gone. Next years Picnic should be on August 8th. Don't miss it!

If you have some Dachshund News, send it to me at bbrennert@shaw.ca

Dachshund Spotting

I had to laugh out loud when I saw this promotional picture that was sent to me by Stephanie Chuchman. But I can't remember a Dachshund ever appearing on the TV show Bewitched!

When Dachshunds show up on TV you all is well with the world.

Recently my daughter spotted a Wire Haired Dachshund in a Ketchup Crispy Minis commercial. A lady in the commercial was threatening to put ketchup on him!

If you spot one, let me know!

What/Who is Wienerdogs.org? Well, the Wienerdogs.org site has been on the Web since 1997, however it started out as www.dachshund.bc.ca. The site started out as just a fun thing to do but quickly grew into what you see here today.  I'm continually updating the page as time permits, and all the new stuff shows up on this page, so keep an eye on it! And here's a small tip: Most of the links have pop-up pictures, so if you have a popup killer, you should disable it before proceeding. And by the way, Wienerdogs.org is not sponsored or supported in any way. I take care of everything.

Visit the Posty site and send a card!Tuula from Finland and Marijke from Holland have been providing seasonal online Dachshund greeting cards for some time now and if you've never checked them out... Take a look and send someone a surprise!

And in a TD Canada Trust commercial a man is seen racing to get to the bank before it closes and while doing so he has to jump over a Dachshund. It happens very quickly so keep our eyes open.

Do you have a question you would like ask a breeder? Our network of experienced Dachshund breeders is available to answer your curious or troubling questions. Simply E-mail Darrin Pettitt @ Admindac Kennel.  It might take a few days for him to get back to you so please be patient. Thanks.

Dachshunds looking for homes

If you're hoping to find a Dachshund posted here available in your area, you might be waiting a quite a while. As some breeders do let me know when pups are available, but most puppies are spoken for before they're born. So please contact a local breeder on my Canadian Breeders page, that is available on the inside pages.

If you have Dachshunds ready for news homes, drop me a note and I'll post them here. Please be sure to include your full name, city, province/state, how many puppies you have and type of dachshund. As without that info, I won't be able to post your dogs.

Ann Carey, writer of The Dachshund: An Owner's Guide to a Happy, Healthy Pet said:

"I can assure you that there's no dog like this dog. No companion as comical, as loving or as adaptable. His goal in life is to love you, protect you, and be your very best friend."

And she is right!

This seductive pose of Model Ciindy Crawford uses a Dachshund to cover up the naughty bits from view. However, the Dachshund was quite clearly pasted into the original picture after the fact, as shown in this brightened version. But Cindy does own a Dachshund called Gerbil, a gift from her ex-husband Richard Gere

A little know piece of dachshund movie trivia: the part of the pet dog of Dorothy (played by Judy Garland) in the Wizard of Oz, was originally scripted for a miniature dachshund named Otto owned by actress Margaret Hamilton who played the Wicked Witch of the West in the movie. Lingering post-war hostility toward the Germans, however, caused the studio to insist upon the substitution of a Norwich terrier to be called Toto, a dog of then more acceptable British descent.

In this rare still shot from unreleased footage, we see Dorothy singing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," with Otto behind her. This scene had to be re-shot after the studio fired Otto, and the original footage has never been shown.

Texas artist Anna-san Henderson created this western motif near abstract of Dachshunds at rest. It's a wonderful piece entitled Los Tres Perros, The Three Dogs.

You an Art Connoisseur? In July of 2000, Foreign Objects, a show of STUTZ artwork was the story of the artist's road trip through Europe with her trusty companion, a dachshund named Olly. What's your art inspiration?

Have you been to a movie in India lately? Did you manage  to catch "A Dog's Day"? The movie by Indian film by Director Murali Nair won a Cannes Film Festival award in 2001. It's a political fable featuring an Indian dictator, and outraged dog, and an international crisis. And the Dog is a Dachshund!

I bet ya didn't know this either: The mascot of the American Women's World Cup Soccer Team is a Dachshund

I'm not quite sure what this token/coins is supposed to be for. The smaller writing on the back say something like "Tastes good with the dog." What?

Edmund Otto, who was more familiar as called Otto-Eichwald, modeled this wonderful detailed dachshund in 1912 Germany for the Rosenthal Company. His many works of porcelain were made at the Art Department of the Selb Kunstabteilung factory.

Betcha didn't know that there is a  live action video and humorous adaptation of a book by Dick Gackenbach. Pepper And All The Legs (book from 1978 and video from 1993) is a Dachshunds view of the world.  A tiny Dachshund finally finds a way to get up the stairs and, once there, encounters various misadventures. It teaches about maintaining self-esteem no matter the circumstances.

In referring to the lead characters' performance in the movie Psycho, Widget Walls from rottentomatoes.com, says "Vince Vaughn's Norman Bates is about as terrifying as a tranquilized Dachshund."  I guess that's bad.

A true talent from England, Mike Sibley captures life-like images of Dachshunds and other creatures in graphite pencil. I have to say that I'm very impressed the detail Mike puts into his artwork and they might just some of the best drawings I've ever seen. I've posted three of his Dachshund drawings in full resolution to keep the detail high, but they may take some time to load. Smooth haired, Long haired and Wire haired.

So I'm always finding advertising that features Dachshunds. But this time I actually found one that uses a Dachshund to sell dog food! It's a newspaper Ad from 1957.
